I am sure everyone following the story is aware the fire is still blazing in Alberta. It seems a good deal of Fort McMurray was spared, however they did lose 2,400 structures. They have no gas, no electricity and no useable water.
Russia, the US, Mexico and other countries have offered assistance in the fire, including Russia's massive Water Bombers, but PM Trudeau has declined the offers stating that all resources in Canada that can be used are being used. That everything that can be humanly done is being done. This fire is so Huge that it is just not possible to fight this by human effort. It's like spitting on a campfire and expecting it to go out. It has showered a bit, but not enough to make it effective. This fire has been blazing for a week now and it looks like there is no end in sight. It needs to downpour. C'mon Mother Nature, what are you waiting for?

I have been staying in the loop on the firestorm on and off all day. The inferno has stretched to over 1500 km and could double in size by the end of the day. The inferno could reach Saskatchewan by the end of the day as well.
Firefighters and officials are saying the fire could burn for weeks!!! They are saying the only way to fight this fire effectively is with a massive downpour. Everyone is on high alert to be able to react quickly depending on wind changes and gusts. They are hoping the inferno moves northeast to a forested area and away from communities. If you haven't heard, Fort McMurray was mostly lost to an uncontrollable Wildfire. The entire city was evacuated, many residents having left with just their clothes on their back, their families and pets. They drove through falling embers, and felt the heat of the inferno as they evac'd on the only highway that leads into and out of Fort McMurray. If you don't know, the highway only leads North and South. Unfortunately, part of the Highway became blocked and those that went North became trapped and those that went South had to be re-evac'd when the Wildfire changed direction again. This Inferno is NOT out, it has been going since Tuesday and has turned into its OWN weather system. They CAN NOT seed the clouds anymore than they are and the Water Bombs are NOT helping. This fire is massive and has stretched to approximately 1000 km and could DOUBLE in Size. The entire area has not seen a lot of rain and the forests have become little more than kindling. Luckily enough, there has been No casualities thus far. Everyone has evac'd safely and those that remained were evac'd. They have had to airlift 1000's of people out of the area. The devastation is real and heartbreaking. There is so much that can be said about this. So many stories of people who have lost their possessions. So many that need aid, so many that have lost their homes and have no idea where to go from here. Police are assembling convoys to help vehicles leave the affected areas. Essential personnel stayed behind to vent the trucks, the oxygen and anything else that could explode near the firefighters. The response was quick, but incredibly heart breaking. You can see the time line of the disaster There are a lot of dash cam's capturing just what these Albertans had to drive through. No sound, but you can see the damage caused by the firestorm Hopefully it begins to rain.
Hopefully the wind changes in favor of the firefighters long enough to get the fire under control. Hopefully it is all over soon. |
